Small City, Big Connections.

What you can expect

  • $19.2 million in cost-shared funding to improve infrastructure and resiliency to one of Saint John's most important roadways.
  • Transitioning to two (2) 3.6 metre vehicle lanes so that the causeway can be raised by 2 metres. In order to reduce the impacts on the surrounding environment, while also ensuring financial responsibility, the Causeway will be raised on the existing footprint.
  • A new 3 metre multi-use active transportation lane that aligns with MoveSJ priorities. Traffic studies show that this upgrade will continue to accommodate vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian demands, without impacting traffic flow.

Reshaping the existing causeway

Raising the Causeway: The Causeway must be raised 2 metres for flood protection. A higher structure requires a much wider base to support it.

Cost implication: Raising the Causeway, while keeping 4 lanes would significantly increase project cost. Transitioning to a two-lane roadway and including an active transportation trail ensures that public funds are used efficiently while maintaining traffic flow for residents and building resiliency for the future.

Staying Connected Throughout the Project

The next stages of the raising project include engaging with external firms on drafting and design for the new roadway and trail. As this project moves forward, we will be connecting with residents, partners, and the broader community to share updates and key milestones.

We are committed to a clear and transparent approach so that everyone who uses this key transportation link stays informed as the project progresses.

City priorities:

GREEN: Raising the Courtenay Bay Causeway by 2 metres strengthens climate resilience and flood protection, aligning with the GREEN priority.

MOVE: The project aligns with the MOVE priority through the inclusion of a multi-use trail that supports MoveSJ objectives by enhancing active transportation connectivity throughout the City, while still ensuring safe and efficient transportation for commuters.
