Community Safety Services (CSS) Team

A non-police response for lower-level disorder and nuisance concerns in your area. The City of Saint John’s Community Safety Services (CSS) Team is a visible, non-police service that helps address lower-level nuisance and public disorder concerns within the CSS service area.

The CSS Team is intended to provide residents, businesses, and community organizations with someone to call for issues that affect day-to-day safety and quality of life, but do not require an immediate police response. The Team’s approach is focused on presence, de-escalation, and voluntary compliance. When needed, they can also connect with other services, including Police, EMS, outreach, or City staff.

When to call the CSS Team?

Call the CSS Team when the issue is non-emergency, is happening within the CSS service area, and you believe an on-the-ground response may help resolve the situation.

Examples include:

a person or group is creating an ongoing disturbance near your property
someone is blocking access to an entrance or walkway
you are concerned about the wellbeing of someone in a public space, but the situation does not appear to require emergency response
you are unsure who to call for a lower-level public disorder issue in the area

The CSS Team is not a replacement for Police. Call 911 immediately for any emergency, including:

violence or threats of violence
a crime in progress
overdose or medical emergency
fire

any situation where someone is in immediate danger

Call the Saint John Police non-emergency line for matters that require law enforcement or a criminal investigation.

Service Area

The CSS Team responds to non-emergency concerns within Waterloo Village, Uptown Saint John, and the Thorne/Rothesay Avenue corridor (as shown in the photo below).

Please note: the CSS Team does not operate city-wide. Calls received from outside the service area may be redirected to another appropriate service.
