Project Update: what's happening in Summer 2022?

The park and beach will be open this summer with portable washroom facilities and lifeguard services. Phase one of construction will avoid major disruptions and is expected to be completed in time for the 2023 summer beach season!

Stay informed and engaged. The next public information session will be held in the fall of 2022 where final park designs will be shared.

The City intends to proceed with a tendering process for the work by early winter, 2022.

“The best sunsets in the city”

Dominion Park, tucked into a cove on Greenhead Island on the City’s west side, offers commanding views up the St. John River, as well as a sandy beach with lifeguard service in the summer. One of the City’s designated district parks, Dominion Park has been a favourite of locals for years and is now well-enjoyed by many visitors.

Dominion Park is a Stonehammer UNESCO Global Geopark site, North America’s first geopark.

Saint John’s only public beach on the St. John River will see the natural assets of Dominion Park enhanced with new and accessible public amenities.

In 2018 and 2019, historic flooding damaged many park amenities. The City and the community worked together to create a three-phase master plan, designed with new amenities built to withstand the impacts of potential future flooding.

Phase 1 of the master plan includes:

  • a permanent accessible building housing a canteen, washrooms and a space for lifeguards and maintenance operations
  • a Sunset Plaza with seating and sun protection
  • new picnic facilities
  • improved beach access
  • changerooms that are removable when necessary
  • improved electrical infrastructure and lighting to facilitate events

Construction of Phase 1 is expected to be completed by summer 2023.

Phases two and three will include a playground, a multiuse sports court and a boat launch.
