Why is the waterfront area being redeveloped?

The redevelopment of Saint John’s iconic waterfront has been 20 years in the making! The redesign and rebuild of Fundy Quay will bring a refreshed, diverse, and exciting mix of retail, residential, commercial, and public spaces for residents and visitors to enjoy.

Who is paying for this project?

The public spaces, infrastructure and seawall portions of the project are supported by funding partners from the Government of Canada, the Government of New Brunswick, and the City of Saint John. The private development is being funded by the Fundy Harbour Group, a private sector developer.

When will construction begin and when will it be completed?

Construction is well underway and the public spaces are still on track to be completed by late 2023.

The private sector development including residential and commercial building infrastructure will proceed in phases and is anticipated to be completed in 8-10 years.

Will the restaurant patios be open this summer?

Temporary patios will once again be built along the boardwalk while construction continues throughout the summer season and into the fall. It is anticipated the temporary patios will be completed by June 30, 2023, ready for patrons to enjoy in time for the Canada day long weekend.

What are some of the new features coming to the space?

There are many exciting new features and entertainment areas that are part of the redesign including:

    • Outdoor winter rink
    • Indoor/outdoor restaurant patios
    • Stage and entertainment area
    • Tidal steps
    • Vendor plaza
    • Promenades and seating

Will there still be outdoor concerts and entertainment along the boardwalk throughout the summer?

While the patios will be open for the 2022 season, the amount of work to be done in order to upgrade the plaza will take up most of the space for the summer season, so events will not be scheduled on the site. Concerts and entertainment will be back on the revamped boardwalk in 2023! There will still be plenty of great entertainment and other activities taking place across the City throughout the summer.

Will there be an extension of the Harbour Passage walking path?

The Harbour Passage walking path is a well-used and very important part of the waterfront for many Saint John residents and visitors. The path will be extended further along the waterfront and will provide more active spaces for everyone to enjoy.
