January 31, 2023 — The results are in: Thousands of residents vote in the first-ever Name the Plow contest


Following weeks of anticipation and more than 4,000 votes, Saint John residents have chosen the names they want to see on eight of the City’s snowplows. In a special announcement this morning on 97.3 The Wave, Saint John Mayor Donna Reardon helped share the results of the City’s first-ever Name the Plow contest.  

“We are happy to see that so many people not only embraced the Name the Plow contest, but truly made it their own and ran with it,” says Saint John Mayor Donna Reardon. “It really was fun to witness the uptake of the contest and to have the very clever short list of names revealed, and now the winning names announced. The creativity and enthusiasm of residents is wonderful; we can all use some lighthearted fun to help us get through the winter months and Saint John residents certainly rose to the challenge.” 

The eight names that received the most votes are:   

  • Kevin 
  • Plow Chicka Plow Plow 
  • Skip the Ditches 
  • Nor'easter Beaster 
  • Reversing Snowfalls 
  • Port City Pusher 
  • Froster Thurston 
  • Fast and Flurrious

January 23, 2023 — After a response of nearly 1,000 submissions, finalists for the City of Saint John’s first Name the Plow contest, in partnership with 97.3 The Wave, have been selected and voting is now open to the public.

“Due to the overwhelmingly positive response from residents, we have decided to double the number of plows that will be named this year, from four to eight," says Lisa Caissie, Director of External Relations. “The trucks cover all areas of the city – north, east, south and west – giving everyone a chance to see one in or near their neighbourhood this winter.”

To vote, click HERE. Voting will remain open until noon on Monday, January 30. The eight winning names will be announced on January 31 and displayed on the sides of the plows for the remainder of the 2023 winter season.

The shortlist captures a variety of the submissions that were received and chosen based on creativity, a Saint John connection, and humour.

“We’re excited to see what the final names will be after voting and look forward to rolling out the newly named trucks in the weeks ahead” adds Caissie. “The City of Saint John thanks 97.3 The Wave for their partnership on this fun, family-friendly contest."

Did you know: Over the winter, the City of Saint John services 1,160 lane kilometres of road, the approximate distance from Saint John to Ottawa, with snow clearing and the application of sand, salt and brine. January 11, 2023  The snowy season has arrived, and the City of Saint John, in partnership with local radio station 97.3 The Wave, is looking for residents to help name four of the snowplows in the City’s fleet with the launch of the first Name the Plow contest.

The fun, family-friendly contest begins Wednesday, January 11, with name suggestions being accepted here on www.ShapeYourCitySaintJohn.ca and www.thewave.ca. Submissions will close on at noon on Thursday, January 19. Top names will be selected for a week of public voting before the four winning names are announced on January 31.

Winning names will be displayed on the sides of the plows using decals, and visible in promotional photos and videos on social media.

Name suggestions deemed inappropriate or offensive will not be accepted. The City of Saint John and 97.3 The Wave reserve the right to disqualify any entry.

Did you know: Over the winter, the City of Saint John services 1,160 lane kilometres of road, the approximate distance from Saint John to Ottawa, with snow clearing and the application of sand, salt and brine.
