Feedback Wanted: Fundy Regional Service Commission's 2027 Proposed Budget
Regional Facilities Serve the Entire Fundy Region
Saint John is proud to be home to several facilities that serve residents from across the Fundy region.
From swimming lessons and sporting events to live performances, conferences, exhibitions and community programs, these facilities are used by people from many communities every day.
Because these facilities serve the entire region, communities have shared in the cost of operating and maintaining them.
What's Changing?
The Fundy Regional Service Commission's proposed 2027 budget continues funding for facility operations but proposes no regional capital funding for most regional facilities.
The exception is the planned Canada Games Aquatic Centre renewal project.
Why Does This Matter?
Deferring capital funding does not eliminate infrastructure needs. Facilities continue to age, equipment continues to wear out and essential repairs may still be required.
One of the questions currently being discussed is how future capital costs for regional facilities should be funded if there is no longer a regional cost-sharing approach. TD Station, the Saint John Arts Centre, and the Saint John Trade and Convention Centre have identified over $1.2 million that is needed for capital repairs in 2027.
Without shared regional capital funding, an important remains: who will pay?
The City is not seeking unlimited spending. Rather, we believe regional facilities should have a sustainable and equitable plan for addressing future capital needs. We are advocating that the region continues to share this funding and continues to invest in these facilities, together.
Looking Ahead
The discussion is not simply about next year's budget.
It is also about creating a long-term plan that:
- Identifies future capital requirements
- Establishes clear priorities
- Improves oversight and accountability
- Creates a fair approach to cost-sharing
- Protects important regional assets for future generations
