The City of Saint John, along with its consultant EXP Services Inc. and its in partnership with contractor Galbraith Construction Ltd., is making steady progress on the Retail Drive Intersection Realignment Project, which is scheduled for completion by fall 2025.

This major infrastructure upgrade includes:

  • Installation of water, sanitary, and storm sewer systems along Rothesay Avenue.
  • Reconstruction of Ashburn Lake Road to improve traffic flow and safety.
  • Realignment of Retail Drive, including upgraded underground services.
  • Installation of new traffic signals at the re-aligned Rothesay Avenue, Retail Drive and Ashburn Lake Road intersection.

Why This Work Is Needed

The current intersection at Rothesay Avenue, Retail Drive, and Ashburn Lake Road is one of the city's busiest and most confusing. Drivers traveling from Route 1 to the East Point Shopping Centre must navigate a zigzag route involving quick lane changes and difficult left turns, often complicated by nearby train tracks.

This outdated configuration has posed safety risks, traffic inefficiencies, and limited commercial growth in the area. To address these issues, the City acquired and removed six buildings to make way for a streamlined, fully accessible intersection that will align Retail Drive directly with Ashburn Lake Road.

Once complete, the new intersection will provide safer, more efficient access to major retailers as well as numerous restaurants and small businesses.

What to Expect During Construction

Traffic diversions and road closures will occur in phases. While access to Rothesay Avenue, Retail Drive, Oakland Street, and Rockwood Avenue will be maintained, temporary disruptions are expected.

The City appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation as we work to enhance transportation infrastructure and safety in this vital commercial corridor.
