Affordable Housing Action Plan: The City has developed a comprehensive and targeted five-year plan to foster better housing outcomes for the community, proactively addressing the affordable housing crunch.
Affordable Housing Grant Program: This grant program will help increase the number of affordable units in the City by incentivizing non-profit and private sector housing developers.
Affordable Housing Soft Cost Grant Program: The City's “Soft Costs Program,” is intended to increase the supply of affordable housing units by funding non-profit housing developers during the pre-construction stage of a project.
Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF) Action Plan: In 2023, the Government of Canada launched the Housing Accelerator Fund to support local governments in creating transformational changes to boost housing supply. In January 2024, the City of Saint John received $9.1 million to implement its HAF Action Plan. With this investment, the City aims to achieve a Housing Supply Growth Target of 1,158 net new residential units over the next three years.
Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF) Grant Program: This grant program is intended to incentivize the creation of housing supply within fully serviced areas of the City over the next three years. The Program contains three funding streams: Construction Challenges Grant; Missing Middle Housing Grant; and Revitalizing Rental Stock.
Permit-Ready Design Initiatives: The City is participating in the federal government's Housing Design Catalogue program. The Housing Design Catalogue simplifies the design process, ensures compliance with building codes, and helps estimate costs, enabling faster construction of homes.
